Alice bought an equal number of orchids and roses.
She spent $\$84$ altogether.
How many flowers did she buy altogether?

Let n be the number of orchids.
n is also the number of roses.
Alice bought a total of 2n flowers.
$2.50 × n + 4.50 × n$
= $84$
$7n$
= $84$

= $12$
$\Rightarrow$ $2n$
= $\boxed{24}$

the flowers can be paired together.
Cost of a pair of flowers
= $2.50 + 4.50$ = $\$7$
Number of pairs of flowers
= $84 ÷ 7$ = $12$
