SP001 Maths Paper 2 - Question 13

A container contained grapes and strawberries.
$\dfrac{3}{5}$ of the fruits were grapes and the rest were strawberries.
After $\dfrac{1}{4}$ of the fruits were eaten,
there were $\dfrac{3}{8}$ of the grapes and 21 strawberries left.
How many fruits were in the container at first?

Let u be the unit of proportion.
LCM of 4, 5 and 8 = 40
Original ratio of apples to oranges to total number of fruits

= 3 : 2 : 5
= 24u : 16u : 40u

After 10u of fruits are eaten, 30u of fruits are left.

$\Rightarrow$ $\dfrac{3}{8}$ $\times$ 24u + 21 = 30u
9u + 21 = 30u
21u = 21
u = 1

Hence, total number of fruits in the container at first = $40u$
= $\boxed{40}$

$\Rightarrow$ $\dfrac{3}{8}$ $\times$ 24u + 21	= 30u
9u + 21	= 30u
21u	= 21
u	= 1

Hence, total number of fruits in the container at first	= $40u$
	= $\boxed{40}$

	= 3 : 2 : 5
